Next, my first mini session is scheduled!  It’ll be April 7 at Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, KY.  Check out the image below for more information.  I only have a few spots left, so if you’re interested in booking, please let me know.  This is a great way to capture those memories that fade so fast.  It’s also a chance to take us for a “test run.”  I’m sure you’ll love the results!

Updated pricing

Effective March 1, 2012, Green Horse Creative Services will have a pricing change.  I want to thank all of my loyal customers for their business and recommendations.  I understand that we live in a world where photography is often taken for granted.  It’s something we’ll do later, or do when we’re thin again, or just do ourselves.  I understand all of those things; however, I also understand how hard it is to actually DO IT.  Even if you are a photographer yourself, it’s hard to step out from behind the lens and document your family through photographs that you can cherish forever.  That’s why I’ve been preaching that there’s no better time than now.  And, of course, I’d love to be the one you choose to capture those moments…to “tell your story.”  There are many, many options for photographers in the area.  I recommend you talk to friends, look at the photographer’s previous work and find someone who fits your style and your budget.

Let me say one thing, though: I realize that the photography landscape has changed dramatically.  DSLR camera are now affordable to most people, actions and textures make editing a little easier and everyone and their brother seem to be offering to do your photos.  I also realize that what we want out of photo sessions isn’t the same as it used to be.  It used to be that once or twice a year the entire family might get dressed up for the church directory or a family portrait.  You’d purchase one 8×10 of that image, frame it and hang it on the wall.  Then, photos for your friends would come during the school year when the dreadful wonderful “chin-on-fist, head-cocked to the left” picture would be taken.  Times have changed.  I know what I want from my photos is the ability to have several to choose from and share with my friends near and far via social media.  I also like to design calendars for my family each Christmas.  If I had to use prints instead of digital files, I probably wouldn’t make them at all.  I also realize that many people now schedule photo sessions more often than they used to – especially if there are cutie-pie kiddos involved!  I tried to keep all of those things in mind as I was setting my pricing, while also keeping in mind that this is a business – the same as getting your hair styled, hiring a lawyer to write a will, taking piano lessons, selling make-up, etc.

I also tried to keep in mind that many of you have been avid supporters of this dream and have become wonderful repeat customers.  For that reason, I’m also introducing some “rewards” programs.  These include:

  1. Two new booked and paid referrals = your next session at 50% off the session fee (making it only $37.50)
  2. A Year of Growing session = $500 (includes newborn, 3 months, 6 month, 9 months and 1 year sessions AND CD of all images. Does not include prints). A savings of $350!

Last, I’ll be introducing “mini-sessions” this year.  I am SUPER excited about this, since I think it will be exactly what many of you are looking for.  Details on the minis will be coming very soon, so watch the blog!  I can’t wait to share all this with you.

Pricing for services can be found here: Pricing

I look forward to serving your photography needs.

One last note: I’ve been asked to do several probono jobs or donate sessions.  I am happy to review all requests, but will focus on events and fundraisers that benefit my local community.  If you have a request, please send an email to allison {at} greenhorsecreativeservices {dot} com.

LA comes East {Huntington, West VA Photography}

When my mom saw these pictures, she simply couldn’t get over how beautiful this family is.  Her exact words to me were that Chandra, the mom you see below, was “stunning.”  I certainly agree!  And, of course, having a simply adorable little guy at your side sure doesn’t hurt either.  This little guy got the best of both worlds in his parents.  His dad, who I’ve called “Freddy” since the first day I met him in college, has become one of my absolute favorite people in the world.  He is not only an up-and-coming movie star (I totally think he’s the next Tim Riggins), but he’s also a genuinely nice person.  He’s one of those guys that you feel completely comfortable around because he’s loving, accepting, caring, genuine, sensitive and fun to be around.:)  His first big role is coming up in the History Channel’s Hatfield and McCoy mini-series debuting this year.  Check out the Facebook site and follow the progress of the series here: Hatfield-McCoy Facebook page or the IMDb site here: Hatfields & McCoys.

But I can’t say enough about his wife either.  I didn’t get to know Chandra until a few years ago, but I can see why they ended up together.  She’s his glue.  She’s beautiful inside and out, fun, happy, smart and is a fantastic mommy.  Not only is she a lawyer, but she also writes a totally awesome blog about DIY weddings that has been picked up by The Knot and MSN.  I can honestly say her wedding was the most gorgeous one I’ve ever seen.  You can find her blog and inspiration here: Oh Lovely Day.

Anyway, we try to get together with Freddy and Chandra when ever we can, which unfortunately isn’t very often since they live in LA.  This fall, though, they came in for a visit and asked me to take some fall photos of their family.  Chandra said she missed the fall leaves and trees and wanted to get some photos made while they were visiting their families in Huntington.  Of course, I said yes.  I mean really…who could resist their little guy, who turned one a few months back.  He’s going to break some hearts one day….as in a few years days.  Love that little grin and super cute personality!  Thanks for letting me capture your time here. Love ya!

Enjoy some of my favorite images from our afternoon together in beautiful Huntington, West Virginia.

What to Wear {Kentucky Photography}

One of the questions I get asked the most before a photo session is “what should we wear?”  Sometimes I’m a little hesitant to answer that question because I believe that your photos should be a reflection of who you are as individuals and as a family.  If you’re laid back and carefree, then putting on heels and a dress probably isn’t going to give you images that you adore.  But, if you’re trendy and a little daring, then why not mix it up and show off your fun side through your family photos? My favorite images are those that show who you truly are and your clothing is a reflection of that.

When asked, I always tell people to coordinate their outfits, but not to be too matchy-matchy.  There are those who want the more traditional look, though, and that’s fine.  But for those searching for inspiration, here’s a little bit of advice.

1. Be yourself.

2. Choose items that are flattering for your figure and things that you love.  If mom has a favorite scarf that she feels beautiful in, then start with that and build the other outfits around it.  Likewise, if big brother and little sister have cute matching shirts to wear, then start there.

3. Layer.  My opinion is that layering always adds dimension to a photograph and can also make the subjects feel more at ease in front of the camera if they’re not worried about “problem areas” or a tucked in shirt.

4. Choose something timeless.  We all can look back at those pictures for the church directory or school yearbook and say “what in the world was I thinking?”  Chances are you may still do that when looking through pictures in 20 years, but if you go with sometime classic and timeless, those chances are slimmer.  Of course, this rule doesn’t apply to senior photography.  For seniors, show off your style.  You’ll enjoy the laughs later!

5. Search the Internet and Pinterest for inspiration.  There are tons of ideas out there with hot color combos.  Don’t be afraid to replicate.

6. Choose colors that compliment your complexion.  I know that yellow is not in my color palate.  Should never, ever, ever, EVER be in my color palate.  Chances are that the clothes in your closet will tell you what looks best on you.  If you find yourself owning an overwhelming amount of blue, then perhaps it’s your color.  Okay, maybe blue isn’t the best example since we do live in Kentucky and most of us have a ridiculous amount of the “correct” color blue hanging in our closets, but you get the drift.:)

Last, follow the color wheel.

Color Wheel

The following advice came from fashionbombdaily.com.

“You can make the following combos using the color wheel as your guide:

1. Colors directly next to each other (i.e. yellow and yellow-orange; yellow and yellow-green; violet and blue-violet, etc.)
2. Colors that form right (90 degree) angles with each other (i.e. yellow and red-orange; blue and violet-red; green and orange, etc.)
3. Colors directly across from each other (i.e. yellow and violet; blue and orange; red and green, etc.)
4. Colors that form a T (i.e. blue, orange, and violet-red; yellow, violet, and red-orange; yellow, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
5. Colors that form an X (i.e. blue, orange, violet-red, and yellow, violet, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)

Since brown is a neutral, it will go with virtually any color on the color wheel. I love to pair a chocolate brown with cobalt blue or fuchsia or bright red—such a fun and bold combo. Of course white, black, and the hues of blue found in denim are also neutrals that go with just about anything.”

Also, there are several photographers who have awesome “what to wear” boards.  Here’s one of my favorites.

Three Months {Central Kentucky Children’s Photography}

I am absolutely loving the fact that I’m getting to see this beautiful little lady every three months! I don’t know what I’m going to do when her first year is complete. For our three month photo shoot, we changed poor little A’s clothes 10,000 times, moved her from basket to basket, handed her off, switched out blankets, and made who-knows-how-many strange faces and noises to get a grin.  She was a little trooper through it all. Of course, her biggest smiles came when she was nearly naked and in her own room standing, of course.  Yes, I realize she was only three months, but this little cutie likes to work her quads!  I can’t wait to see how her personality develops as she grows up.  I think she’s going to be smart, beautiful, determined and kind – just like her momma.  Enjoy some of my favorites!
